Have you ever stepped into a new environment and suddenly questioned everything you thought you were good at?
It does not matter how many times you have proven yourself. The moment the ground shifts; a new job, a different boss, unfamiliar expectations; the confidence you thought was solid can start to wobble.
That was me for much of my hairdressing career.
I had been finalised for awards, chosen for development teams, and recognised for my skills. On paper, I looked confident. I knew I was good at what I did. Yet the moment I moved to a different salon, all of that inner stability vanished.
Every salon has its own style and culture. The way you cut, colour, or even speak to clients can suddenly feel “wrong” if it does not match the environment. And in those moments, confidence is not about skill anymore. It is about whether you feel safe enough to belong.
Some salons I walked into with confidence and momentum. Other times I felt shaky from the very beginning. Either way, at some point my confidence would crash. A mistake, even a small one, could spiral into self doubt. Bosses would second guess hiring me. Some people seemed to wait for me to fail. And I started second guessing myself too.
That constant up and down left me agitated and exhausted. One day I felt on top of the world. The next, I felt worthless and not enough. I knew my skills had not disappeared overnight, but my nervous system did not feel safe. And when your body does not feel safe, confidence collapses.
Maybe for you, it shows up in a meeting where you suddenly lose your words. Or in your business, when you freeze before posting online. On the outside, people think you are confident. Inside, your nervous system is running an old story, “you are not safe, you are not enough.”
What I know now is this: confidence is not a personality trait. It is a nervous system skill.
You can be the most talented, hardworking, high achieving woman, but if your body is bracing for criticism or waiting for the moment someone questions you, confidence will always rise and fall like a wave.
That is why the work I do now focuses on both the subconscious mind and the nervous system. Tools like NLP and Time Line Therapy® help clear the old experiences that taught your body to doubt, fear, or shut down. Instead of living in reaction to an environment that can make or break you, you start to feel steady no matter where you are.
Confidence becomes less about proving yourself to others and more about knowing, deep in your system, that you are safe to show up as you.
Because when your nervous system feels safe, your confidence is no longer a fragile trait. It is a skill you can lean on every day.
If you are ready to stop riding the highs and lows of confidence and finally feel steady in yourself, my one to one coaching program combines NLP and Time Line Therapy® to help you create lasting self trust and safety. [Learn more here →]
